Note on Galvanised Nails:

Galvanising provides a protective zinc coating, but exposure to certain conditions can compromise its effectiveness. Salt in the air and water, high humidity, extreme weather, industrial fumes, use with dissimilar metals, impact from driver blades, and exposure to chemicals can lead to the breakdown of the zinc coating, causing the fastener to rust.

Wet conditions can also lead to reactions between the zinc plating and tannin acid found in cedar and redwood, resulting in dark stains. Preservatives and fire retardants in wood may contain salts that are corrosive to the fastener. Additionally, factors such as decayed materials, inappropriate installation, neglect, misuse, or alteration can negatively affect the coating and performance.
